Learn to Grow your own onions

Growing your own onions is a rewarding project. Whether you want to know exactly where your food comes from, save money on groceries, or simply enjoy a relaxing new hobby, the process is unique and deeply satisfying.

If you feel a bit nervous about starting, don't worry! Gardening is a skill anyone can learn. By following these simple steps, you will have everything you need to start your first onion harvest.

The steps describe here, are applicable to a huge variety of Vegetables.

Steps

Step 1: Find the Right Spot

Onions love the sun. You need to find a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight every day.

  • Outdoors: A sunny patio or a garden bed is ideal.

  • Indoors: A bright windowsill in a living room or bedroom can work, provided the plants get enough light.

Step 2: Choose Your Soil

Not all soil is created equal. For the best results, visit a local hardware store or garden center and look for "All-Purpose Potting Mix" or "Garden Soil." * If you are planting in a pot, make sure the bag says "Potting Mix," as it helps with drainage.

  • If you are planting directly in the ground, "Garden Soil" is the way to go.

Step 3: Select Your Onion Variety

There are several ways to start onions, but for beginners, onion sets (small bulbs) are the easiest choice because they are already partially grown. It is possible to find some seeds already on the spout stage. we personally recommend the following.

  • Egyptian Walking Onions: These are excellent for beginners because they are hardy and grow quickly.

  • Standard Sets: You can also try yellow, red, or white onion sets, which are widely available and very reliable.

Step 4: Planting Your Onions

Now for the fun part! Follow these steps to get your onions in the ground:

  1. Dig a small hole: It only needs to be about 1 inch deep.

  2. Place the bulb: Put the onion bulb in the hole with the pointy end facing up and the hairy root end facing down.

  3. Space them out: If you are planting several, leave about 4 inches of space between each one so they have room to grow wide.

  4. Cover and Water: Gently cover the bulb with soil until only the very tip is showing (or just barely covered). Give them a good drink of water right away to help them settle in.
